Port Alma, Queensland
On the southern end of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef, lies the world heritage Heron Island group near the mouth to the mighty Fitzroy River with is massive 10 metre tides. In between these two landmarks lies Casuarina Creek and the Olsson’s Salt Works lies next to this creek in a place called Port Alma. Built on mangrove mud flats by the Olsson men (Charles, Malcolm and Don) in the 1980’s, the Port Alma Salt Works produces a sea salt rich in marine minerals.
